Target Canada

targetTarget Canada Co. is the Canadian subsidiary of United States-based discount department store chain Target Corporation, formed in 2011 to oversee the company’s Canadian operations. In 2011, it acquired the leaseholds of 189 locations operated by Hudson’s Bay Company’s (HBC) Zellers discount chain, with the intent to use 125 of these sites to open Target stores in 2013.

Target officially confirmed the list of its locations in July 2012.  The chain will open 127 stores in 2013. Of this total, 125 will replace former Zellers stores.  The other two locations will be in Niagara Falls and Centre Laval, both of which are sites previously occupied only by Walmart stores.  Target selected the leasehold interests of sites across the country operated by Zellers Inc., with plans to open 125 to 135 stores in Canada starting in March/April 2013.  The announcement confirms the first 125 stores that will open in 2013, and later this year (2012) Target will confirm additional store locations that will open starting in early 2014 and beyond.

Since the beginning of this year, Target has been publically confirming the Zellers sites that it intends to convert into Target stores for 2013. In addition to these previously announced locations, Target will also open a store on Morrison Street in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Centre Laval in Laval, Quebec, both of which are scheduled to open next year.  Please see the appendix below for a full list of the stores scheduled to open in 2013.

“Construction has already begun on our first set of stores and we are excited to see the transformation as the Target brand comes to life in Canada,” said Tony Fisher, president of Target Canada. “We have stores spanning from coast-to-coast and we can’t wait to open our doors in Canada and deliver on our Expect More. Pay Less. brand promise.”

Each site will be closed for a period of six to nine months for extensive renovations to bring the true Target brand experience to Canada.  An investment of more than $10 million will be spent remodeling each location.

Target expects to employ between 150 to 200 team members at each store and has already started hiring its store leadership positions.  Hourly recruitment will begin towards the end of 2012 and into 2013.  Anyone interested in a job at Target is invited to visit for more information.

Target Canada will be including smaller Starbucks stores in the majority of its locations.
